Highland Reckoning: South West Survival Founder Steven Kelly Takes on the Scottish Highlands

Highland Reckoning puts South West Survival founder Steven Kelly, also known as Survival Ste, into a seven-day survival challenge in the Scottish Highlands alongside fellow Naked and Afraid survivalists Jamie Frizzell and Sam Mouzer.

The series is more than an outdoor adventure. It is a practical demonstration of the same core survival priorities that sit behind South West Survival training: shelter, fire, water, food, risk management, teamwork and making sound decisions when conditions start working against you.

What is Highland Reckoning?

Highland Reckoning is an independently created survival series set in the Scottish Highlands. Steven Kelly, Jamie Frizzell and Sam Mouzer take on the challenge with limited equipment, changing weather and the need to solve real problems as the days progress.

Episode 1 introduces the three survivalists and immediately starts applying pressure. The team has to think about shelter, water, food, movement and the consequences of losing time in an environment where cold and wet conditions can become serious quickly.

Why Highland Reckoning matters to South West Survival

South West Survival is built around practical skills rather than survival theory alone. Highland Reckoning gives viewers a chance to see those skills being applied outside a controlled training session.

Steven served for 23 years in 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery and has since taken on televised survival challenges including Naked and Afraid and Naked and Afraid: Apocalypse. Highland Reckoning brings that experience into an independent format where the emphasis can stay firmly on skills, judgement and what actually happens when a plan meets the environment.

The survival skills being tested

  • Shelter building under time pressure, with protection from wind and rain taking priority over appearance.

  • Fire lighting in damp British conditions using natural materials, preparation and reliable technique.

  • Finding, assessing and treating water rather than judging safety by appearance alone.

  • Managing food and energy when calories are limited and physical workload remains high.

  • Processing and preserving meat so a successful food source can continue to provide value over several days.

  • Navigation, safety planning and understanding how quickly cold, wet conditions can reduce capability.

  • Teamwork and decision-making when fatigue, hunger and uncertainty begin to affect judgement.

Real survival is about priorities

One of the biggest lessons from the series is that survival rarely comes down to one spectacular skill. It is usually a chain of smaller decisions. Getting shelter up before last light. Protecting yourself from the wet. Treating water before dehydration affects performance. Preserving calories. Recognising when a small problem is becoming a bigger one.

That is exactly how we approach survival training at South West Survival. Fire lighting, shelter building, water, food and navigation matter, but the bigger objective is teaching people how to think through a situation and put those skills in the right order.

From Highland Reckoning to South West Survival training

The skills demonstrated throughout Highland Reckoning directly overlap with the training South West Survival delivers through survival and bushcraft experiences, school programmes, group activities and corporate events.

A television or YouTube survival challenge is not the same as a structured training course, but it provides a useful window into why the fundamentals matter. When the weather changes, daylight disappears or energy drops, simple skills done well become far more important than complicated tricks.
